Or your sprinkler system to only come on when there is no rain predicted for that day, to only turn your air-conditioning on when you are at home, or to disable the geyser timer when your phone hasn’t been connected to your home’s wifi network for 24hours or more or even to turn on your geyser 1 hour before loadshedding starts after 5pm, the possibilities are endless when it comes to automations and you are truly only limited by your imagination.

Here is the best part….. ITS FREE!!! Yes, Home Assistant is free to use and is a fully open-source platform. It is designed to be user friendly and easy to grasp. Hardware requirements are minimal and most people would have an old laptop or desktop with 4 or 8gb of ram, or Raspberry PI4 that can be repurposed as a Home Assistant server, solid state harddrives would give you a big performance boost, but your old spinny harddrive will do just fine as well (yes, we do also offer mini pc’s purpose built for Home Assistant and that’s future proofed).

Now there is a caveat, to allow you to access your Home Assistant from your smart phone or pc remotely when you are not at home, you would need to either subscribe to their Nabucasa Home Assistant Cloud, fully secure and encrypted remote service, for a monthly subscription of 6.50 USD or annual subscription of  65 USD. Or alternatively we can setup port forwarding on your router, each user has a username and password to protect access to your server, this option is free. Home Assistant will also notify you at any failed attempts to log into your server as an added measure of security.
